Cooking with Beatrice

A cooking show host unwittingly partners with a zombie.

“Cooking with Beatrice” was the culminating 3D short film project created by my team for our third year at Rubika Montréal. Our team was composed of the following members:

Abhinay Bademar
Itai Weinberg
Joan Omari
Pawan Pradeep
Prince Atie
and me, Brandon Clark

This project allowed us to work on all aspects of the 3D animation process, from storyboarding and character design, to rigging and final rendering.

Preproduction

I was responsible for rigging our main character Beatrice. Using a rig builder supplied by our professor, we created controls and customized the rig according to the requirement. In our case, we needed additional controls for the hair as well as the teeth and tongue. The other interesting part of the rigging process was our teams stylistic decision to make the eyes a cartoony abnormal sphere. This required a whole different set of deformers to achieve. It was challenging, but the final results were worth the effort.

Although I wasn’t involved with the character modelling team, I was involved with the design and assisted in refining the final sculpt product prior to its retopology in maya.

In a world without colour, a detective will do whatever it takes to bring it back.

“Spectrum” was the culminating 2D animation project for my second year at Rubika Montréal. The film was a partnership between my teammate Joan Omari and myself.

2D Backgrounds

I was responsible for a number of the backgrounds in our short. I am immensely proud of what we were able finish in such a short amount of time. In the school calendar, animation of the short film did not begin until February. With final touches on these backgrounds in AfterEffects, the film was presented to a jury of our peers and industry experts in mid-June.

We learned a great deal from our work on this project, wrestling with our storyboard for a long time before we felt satisfied with our work, which left us with an even tighter deadline for completion.

Mission Global Promo

In the summer of 2021, I was hired to create a promotional video for a film festival put on by the company Mission Global, with the goal of inspiring young filmmakers to create their own films to bring awareness to the underprivileged and exploited.

I was the sole artist and animator working on the film. As such, I was in charge of the artistic development, animation, and compositing of the film. At the time, I had only a high school animation course and some first year graphic design behind me. So, despite some now obvious flaws in the project, I am still immensely proud of what I was able to accomplish in the space of two months.

It was an honour to be able to work on such a meaningful project and collaborate with such amazing people so early on in my career.

Egg Whites

A short film project started in my final year of highschool, it was taken to the rough animation phase by the completion of the course.

The project serves as a benchmark for how much I’ve improved in the span of three years, and it’s something I’ve grown proud of.

As a result, I’ve decided to finish it as a personal project. There is no firm deadline on the project, but I’m aiming to have it finished within the next year.

Characters

The video to the right is one of the first scenes I’ve animated to test the viability of a solo workflow. To my surprise the largest difficulty was continuity and the actual animation of the characters was rewarding and presented only minor technical challenges.

The backgrounds and characters were drawn in Procreate while the animation for this project was done in Procreate Dreams. Despite the softwares lack of complex rigging tools, it was versatile enough for my needs.

The images (left) are updated character designs of the original version (above). I created the revised version after studying character design at Rubika Montreal. I embraced a cutout or puppet animation style, not just for an easier animation style, but to infuse the project with a dynamic and captivating flair, making it possible for me to bring my vision to life on my own.
